About this article
In this article, we have provided you with the latest opinions from scientists (lead researchers) and Registered Dietitians about Urolithin A. The Nutriessential team did extensive research and filtered authentic sources on Urolithin A.
Scientists/ Researchers perspective

Dr Singh and Dr Amico investigated the impact of oral supplementation with Urolithin A. Their findings are interesting and add valuable scientific insight.
They found that Urolithin A supplementation improves muscle strength and exercise-performance measures, along with an impact on mitochondrial biomarkers. They gave Mitopure orally for 4-months at the dosing of 500 mg and 1000 mg.
In the study background, they explained that with aging, muscle mass naturally declines. Both natural and environmental factors like diet and exercise dictate the trajectory of the decline. To manage this natural and age-related muscle decline, nutrition and exercise are considered primary. Exercise activates mitophagy (removal and recycling of dysfunctional mitochondria). What about exercise regimens that require huge adherence? Such commitments are difficult to maintain.
Mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of aging. Research studies have associated impaired mitochondrial function with slow walking speed, muscle fatigue, loss of strength, and sarcopenia. This is the main reason why mitochondrial health is considered pivotal to improve muscle health.
Urolithin A is a gut-microbiome-derived postbiotic metabolite found in pomegranate, berries, and walnuts. From a clinical translational perspective, it is safe and bioavailable in humans. When administered for 4 weeks orally in older adults, it has been found to improve cellular health in sedentary older adults.
Dr Singh and team in their study included untrained adults between 40 and 64 years of age. They were also screened on the criteria of being overweight and having low physical endurance. They chose a 4-month intervention period to start detecting an impact on physical-performance- and muscle-function-related study endpoints based on guidelines and recommendations of expert groups on clinical trials focused on muscle function.
The main sub-headings on the perspectives of Dr Singh and his team include:
-
Long-term oral administration of Urolithin A is safe and well tolerated.
-
Urolithin A oral administration significantly improves leg muscle strength at both doses.
-
Urolithin A is bioavailable and induces markers of improved cellular health in the plasma
-
Urolithin A induces a signature of improved cellular health in the skeletal muscle.
Registered Dietitians’ perspectives on Urolithin A
According to Registered Dietitians, the research is still evolving for Urolithin A. Most of the evidence comes from short-term studies. There is a dose-dependent response for markers of autophagy, which only increased at lower and not higher doses. Beyond 4 months, results may be compromised. Long-term evidence beyond the duration of currently available clinical trials remains limited.
So, it is important to present all the evidence to the client to enable them to make an informed decision regarding the use of Urolithin A supplementation.
They suggest the following practices while starting Urolithin A supplementation:
-
Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting a supplement.
-
One should consume a diet rich in polyphenols like pomegranates and protein.
-
Take the supplement with a fat source because it increases bioavailability.
-
Active participation in strength training is also helpful.
-
Aim for optimising sleep and stress management.
-
Always buy supplements from reputable, trusted, and transparent brands.
-
Choose brands that are third-party tested.
-
Take supplements at the same time daily.
July presentation on Mitopure by a Registered Dietician

Dr Jennifer Scheinman, in her latest presentation on 30 July 2026, spoke about mitochondrial health, its role in longevity, and Mitopure. She works with Timeline, the company behind Mitopure.
She says, “Mitopure is the branded name for urolithin A. Mitochondrial decline has also been a central hallmark of aging.”
Jennifer Scheinman stated that Timeline played a major role in bringing Urolithin A research into commercial development.
She added, “Timeline, who are the makers of Mitopure, really are the ones who put urolithin A on the map. And they’ve approached studying this molecule very much the way that almost like a pharmaceutical is studied, where they identified these potential bioactives that are in nature, and they put them through rigorous preclinical trials in worms and mice. Then they move them through human trials before we even had a product on the market. And now, we are continuing to push the envelope and partnering with top leading research institutions across the world to understand all of the meaningful clinical benefits that urolithin A…some that we already have well-established and then some that are just starting to…they’re very promising in preclinical, and we’re starting to unlock whether there’s some benefits in humans as well. So, we’ll start to go through the clinical data here.”
She explained many studies. The Nutriessential team added information about one study.
She added, “So, our next study, this was in sedentary older adults. They were an average age of 70, and it was a similar type of study. This one was specifically, though, with 1,000 milligrams of urolithin A. And after just eight weeks, we saw significant improvements, both in the hand and the leg muscle in endurance.”
“Another thing that I don’t have listed here, I think that’s important, is an improvement in a six-minute walk test. So, at baseline, we measured how far an older adult could walk during six minutes. This is sort of a standard fitness test that might be done in adults. And at the end of the trial, while it was not statistically significant, there was a meaningful, about a 30-meter, increase in how far an older adult could walk, again, without doing any sort of exercise training. So, very clinically meaningful, trending towards significant, but it did not make statistical significance at the end of the study.”, she adds.
In a study, Mitopure was used. She said, “They did use our Mitopure molecule because it is clinically validated. It’s clean, and it’s pure, but we played no role in this. And in fact, we learned about the results sort of after the study was even done. And so, that really shows the credibility of our science and the lack of bias in some of this research.”
Do experts use Mitopure?

In this interview, she added, “ We have top doctors and scientists that are part of our board and that use Mitopure both personally…I’d already mentioned some of the research we’re doing in the Buck Institute of Aging, but some leading thought leaders in longevity medicine are very excited about all of the research because we’re doing things differently.
In this interview, she was asked about real-world feedback on Mitopure. She highlighted improvement in energy and strength. About the dose, she said that when they studied 250 mg of Urolithin A, there was no significant activation of mitophagy. 500 mg is the lowest dose studied.
