Product Description

Metagenics UltraMeal Advanced Protein is a medical food. The ingredients are included to support the nutritional management of individuals dealing with loss of muscle mass due to general ageing. A single serving provides a total of about 20 g of protein from pea protein, rice protein, and added amino acids. It also contains vitamins and minerals.

Reality Check by Nutriessential

Aging is a natural process, where muscle loss is common. Often, older adults may have limited mobility and they may not get enough movement in their regular life which suppresses muscle protein synthesis. This can lead to weakness, accidental falls, and greater resistance to training.

Digestion also gets slower as people age and they may not have a bigger appetite. So, their nutrient consumption may also go down. They may not be able to meet the protein benchmarks necessary for their age.

Some older adults may have comorbidities that further increase age-associated muscle loss. They may have to follow a strict diet and this can limit adequate protein intake.

On aging Reddit forums, people discuss ways to support lean mass when they try to do strength training and resistance training as much as their joints allow them to. They want to improve mobility and maintain independence. They are more interested in low-impact resistance training and practical support to meet their protein goals.

Evidence Check by Nutriessential

A 2026 review studied the impact of different protein sources on acute muscle protein synthesis following resistance training. It reviewed 52 previous clinical trials involving healthy adults who did resistance exercise and consumed a single dose of a specific protein source without eating anything else in between. Network meta analyses was done to compare the different protein soruces against each other. Among the different sources, native whey, pea protein, whole egg protein, mycoprotein, and standard whey protein ranked the highest. Dosage analysis revealed highest predicted muscle-building responses for animal-based and plant-based protein occurred at doses between 18 to 25 grams.

A 2026 review published in the Frontiers explores sarcopenia and the connection between gut microbiota and skeletal muscles. The authors mention that aging affects gut microbiota. Dietary changes including eating fiber-rich foods and adequate protein supports good bacteria, which in turn supports muscle-protecting SCFAs.
