How is nutrient deficiency connected to workplace fatigue?

Vitamin deficiencies are rising because in today's busy world, health is often neglected.

Workplace fatigue is often connected to poor sleep, stress, or heavy workloads, but nutrient status is commonly overlooked. Many modern workplace habits, including long working hours, irregular meal patterns, high intake of processed foods, limited sunlight exposure, and chronic stress, increase the risk of nutrient deficiencies that affect energy metabolism and overall vitality. 

Several micronutrients are associated with workplace fatigue. Among them, the most important ones are vitamin D, vitamin B12, iron, and magnesium.

Connection between vitamin D and workplace fatigue

Vitamin D deficiency has been commonly associated with workplace fatigue. This is understood because of limited sun exposure and long indoor working hours. The scenario is just the opposite for manual labourers who spend more time in the sun. A study found iron deficiency to be more prevalent in tea estate workers. The iron status was directly associated with worker productivity, independent of physical effort. Your environment undoubtedly dictates nutrient deficiencies. 

Another interesting example comes from a study that highlighted a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among healthcare professionals, raising concerns about their health, resilience, and work performance.

I read one interesting study that correlated serum Vitamin D with the extent of pain and fatigue.

A study found vitamin B12 and D3 deficiencies to be prevalent among corporate vegetarian employees. Women over age 45 should pay particular attention to their vitamin D3 levels.

Connection between B12 and workplace fatigue

Individuals following vegetarian or vegan diets are at increased risk of vitamin B12 deficiency if adequate fortified foods or supplementation are not included. 

Young people are becoming vegans. They prefer to adopt a vegetarian diet, and it's their choice. But important information is often overlooked. If a person is not getting enough vitamins and iron through their diet or appropriate supplementation (when needed), they may develop significant deficiencies in B vitamins, particularly vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause pronounced symptoms of exhaustion and fatigue, even in the low-normal range. 

If we correlate how vitamin B12 deficiency can affect workplace life, then some of the common considerations would be feeling exhausted while being physically and mentally tired at the workplace. The energy levels may be so low that it is normal to find it difficult to concentrate on work. 

A person's laboratory vitamin B12 value may still fall within the laboratory's "normal reference range," but it is very important to note that if it is at the lower end of that range, some people can still develop symptoms of B12 insufficiency.

Connection between iron and workplace fatigue 

In women, iron deficiency is very common. Workplace fatigue is experienced first; anaemia is detected later. Research has shown that women with unexplained fatigue and low serum ferritin but without anaemia experience a meaningful reduction in fatigue after targeted iron supplementation.

Connection between magnesium and workplace fatigue

Stress is a part of the workplace. But again, the connection between stress and magnesium is overlooked.

Stress could increase magnesium loss, causing a deficiency. If magnesium deficiency occurs, it could increase the body’s susceptibility to stress, creating a vicious circle between magnesium and stress.  

Magnesium plays a critical role in ATP production. Apart from chronic stress, poor dietary quality and high consumption of ultra-processed foods contribute to inadequate magnesium intake. Since magnesium participates in hundreds of enzymatic reactions involved in energy production, insufficient intake contributes to persistent fatigue.

These nutrients are interconnected with the body's energy-producing pathways. When one or more of them are deficient, efficient cellular energy production can be compromised, resulting in symptoms such as persistent tiredness, poor concentration, reduced physical stamina, and impaired work performance.

Final words

Various studies conducted among professionals such as tea estate workers and corporate employees have demonstrated a high prevalence of nutrient deficiencies, including iron, magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12.

These findings reinforce the need for greater awareness regarding dietary habits, targeted supplementation, regular physical activity, appropriate sun exposure, and periodic nutritional assessment.
