From Community Discussions to Research: Nutriessential’s Case Study on Fatigue

In this case study, we want to highlight an important discussion that has become part of your daily life. It's even going on in community forums.

The topic is fatigue. To be more precise, it's more about workplace fatigue.

When we were doing our research, we found that people are overlooking nutrient status when they talk about workplace fatigue. We wanted to find out what they are actually relating workplace fatigue to in real life. We just wanted to delve deeper into this topic to find out what is exactly what is going on, whether it has any association with scientific research and what we want to tell people finally out of this discussion. 

Community Case 1: When More Sleep Doesn't Mean More Energy but it indicates something else

Community discussion highlighting sleep quality and low energy as common factors associated with workplace fatigue.

This community discussion is discussing whether long sleep itself causes exhaustion or whether sleeping so long could indicate another issue. Oversleeping is being discussed here.

One commenter adds an important distinction: if someone regularly needs or gets unusually long sleep, they should consider why that's happening rather than simply blaming the fatigue on oversleeping.

People are even competing on two aspects: Oversleeping causes tiredness versus Oversleeping is a symptom, not the cause.

Nutriessential verdict

This discussion tells us something different: Nutrient status isn't top-of-mind for these consumers.

They are not thinking “Could my nutritional status be contributing to my oversleepiness?”

The Nutriessential team did a literature review to find out which nutrient deficiency can cause excessive sleepiness. What we found was very interesting.

Dr Khawaja et al and colleagues presented a case of severe vitamin B12 deficiency as an unusual and rare cause of hypersomnia. 

They said, “ A high index of suspicion and testing for vitamin B12 levels may be performed in patients with an unknown cause of hypersomnia despite normal blood count without any evidence of macrocytosis, as was the case in our patient.” 

The case report does not suggest that vitamin B12 deficiency is a common explanation for excessive sleepiness. Instead, it demonstrates why persistent or unexplained symptoms sometimes require looking beyond sleep duration alone and considering nutritional and medical factors as part of a broader clinical assessment. 

Community Case 2 — The 2–4 PM Workplace Energy Crash where you ignore nutrients

Online community discussion about stress, burnout, and persistent workplace fatigue experienced during daily work routines.

A community discussion was happening around the “mid-afternoon energy crash”, including sudden tiredness or mental shutdown around 2–4 PM.

The person who initiated the conversation says, “I'll have a good breakfast, a decent lunch, and then right in the middle of the afternoon, my brain just completely shuts down for an hour.” This person wants to know whether other people experience the same thing and how they manage it without relying heavily on caffeine.

Now this conversation centred around many themes.

  • Lunch/carbohydrates: As per discussion on carbs, the commenters believe that a high-carb lunch may contribute to the crash. Reducing lunch carbohydrates made a big difference, and lighter lunch planning may be helpful.

  • Naptime: One commenter says, “I believe we evolved to nap in the beginning of the afternoon; IIRC we stopped with the industrial revolution.” Another commenter says, Seconding the blood sugar thing- about 90 minutes after a meal is a second insulin dump which lowers blood sugar (quite rapidly for me- to where nap time is not a choice, but mandatory). I'm getting it looked at.

  • Blood sugar: Some commenters attribute their crashes to changes in blood glucose after eating. One person mentions he experienced something similar and was then diagnosed with diabetes. 

  • Eating something: A commenter says snacking is important. “For me it isn't tiredness, but I suddenly become very depressed at 3 pm almost every day, no matter how good of a mood I was in before. I hate 3 pm. But I've found that eating something usually helps at least a little bit. You might feel low on energy because you need a healthy snack. Try having a snack, some water (with lemon if you want; citrus can help wake you up as well), and getting some sunlight around that time.

  • Effect of last working hour: One commenter says, “Mine hits at almost 4 pm every day. When I worked in an office, it made that last hour feel awful. It sucks because I find it completely throws me off whatever rhythm I'd gotten into, and it takes a good while to get that back, and by then the workday's over.

Now when I feel it, I take a short break and have a cup of tea, some water and a long stretch or a bit of fresh air if I can wangle the time for it, and it tends to dissipate. On the plus side, it gives me a pretty good idea of when 4 pm is approaching, which is sometimes useful.” This person says that the final hour of the workday is very difficult because of crash.

  • Possible nutrient or medical issues: Toward the end, people mention vitamin D, B12, iron, hormones, narcolepsy, hypothyroidism and diabetes as possibilities when fatigue is unusually severe. 

Note: These are community anecdotes/suggestions, not established diagnoses from the thread.

Nutriessential verdict:

People experiencing afternoon workplace fatigue don't attribute it to one single cause. They are connecting it with meal composition, circadian rhythms, blood sugar, caffeine, accumulated mental workload, sleep, health or nutrient issues.

We found that nutrient deficiency is only a minor theme in this particular discussion. 

Nutriessential team found a study in the Journal Nutrients where authors shared important details on fatigue. We found these details to be worth sharing as pointers so that our readers have a better understanding of fatigue.

  • Fatigue, characterised by lack of energy, mental exhaustion and poor muscle endurance that does not recover following a period of rest, is a common characteristic symptom of several conditions and negatively impacts the quality of life of those affected

  • Fatigue is amongst common complaints in daily life, negatively impacting work performance, family life, and social relationships. Fatigue can be conceptualised as a sensation of exhaustion or difficulty performing intellectual or physical activities, which is often not recovered after a period of rest

  • Patients with fatigue typically report lack of energy, mental exhaustion, poor muscle endurance, delayed recovery after physical exertion, and nonrestorative sleep

  • Physiologic fatigue, characterised by imbalance in the routines of exercise, sleep, diet, or other activities unrelated to an underlying medical condition, is most common in adolescents and the elderly and is relieved with rest

  • Chronic fatigue, characterised by intense physical and mental fatigue of unknown cause, is not relieved with rest and lasts longer than six months

This research study highlighted the importance of nutrients in combating fatigue. The authors mention, “Gradual physical exercise together with cognitive behaviour therapy remain the most common approaches. 

Vitamins and minerals, playing essential roles in a variety of basic metabolic pathways that support fundamental cellular functions, affect cognitive and psychological processes including mental and physical fatigue. 

Therefore, several micronutrients, enzymes and amino acids have been suggested to have a role in fatigue, cognition, or psychological functions. Efficient and safe vitamin and mineral supplementation of individuals suffering from fatigue may provide a beneficial treatment option.”

Community Case 3: When After-Work Exhaustion Becomes Unbearable, and you encounter many opinions from people

Community discussion sharing experiences with recovery, healthy habits, and managing persistent workplace fatigue.

This person is doing a 9–5 job after being unemployed for a long period. The work is hectic and involves huge periods of physical activity like constant standing and walking. The way this person is describing the level of fatigue he is experiencing is notable. 

It mentions, “I'm so exhausted I can barely do anything. I just crawl into bed and lie there. Sometimes I'm too exhausted to eat dinner. Once or twice I've fallen asleep on the way home from work. Is this a normal level of after-work exhaustion? Or perhaps I can't handle the long hours.”

The highest-engagement comment in this community forum discussion came around proper breakfast, lunch, snacks, hydration and bedtime routine. 

So the community is first thinking about energy intake and recovery, rather than supplements.

A turning point in the discussion came when one of the commenters said, “For the first couple of weeks, sure, but after two months I'd expect you to be adjusting and developing stamina even if you're not used to physical work. 9 - 5 are normal hours, and most people who work them aren't struggling this much. I think you should go to the doctor and see if they'll run some tests. Underactive thyroid can make you perpetually exhausted.

Nutrient deficiency entered the conversation much more strongly when another commentor said, Many people in the UK are deficient in Vitamin D and probably some other things too. My blood test made grim reading but a daily multivitamin ironed out 80% of it, and nowadays I feel a lot better. Definitely worth getting checked out.

Nutriessential's insight from this community forum discussion

Consumers seem to start thinking about nutrient deficiencies when fatigue crosses a threshold. 

Across the community discussions we reviewed, nutrient deficiencies appeared to enter the conversation more prominently when fatigue was described as persistent or unusually severe.

In this case study, we found that Consumers themselves introduced vitamin D, iron, anaemia and blood testing into the conversation once they perceived the fatigue as unusually severe.

Our team of experts at Nutriessential says, do not connect long-experienced fatigue with supplements directly. This is because persistent fatigue deserves investigation, and nutrient status is one part that shouldn't be overlooked. This is similar to what is mentioned in one of the research studies. Healthcare professionals’ perspectives highlight the need to address both practical and psychological aspects of fatigue management through individualised and holistic approaches. 

What do we interpret from these case studies?

These case studies highlight two important considerations around workplace fatigue:

  • When you discuss your issues of workplace fatigue with your colleague or friend, you are likely to get answers around carbs, blood sugar, napping, getting sunlight, etc.

  • When you ask this of someone with experience, they will steer the discussion towards eating patterns, hydration, blood tests, nutrients, underlying health issues, etc.

This discussion pattern in a community forum raises an interesting question for broader consumer research: at what point do people begin considering nutritional or medical explanations for fatigue?
