We know that there are multiple online stores. We trust larger platforms like Amazon, which provide thousands of dietary supplement options.

What consumers don't know?

These options may put you at risk. Not all supplement labels are transparent. They do not reflect what is inside the bottle.

What consumers finally choose?

They are not choosing health but they are preferring convenience and affordability.

What happens in the dietary supplement industry?

Companies are required to follow Good Manufacturing Practices. The supplements manufactured should be safe and maintain label transparency. They should ensure safety, efficacy and product quality.

Dangers of buying supplements online from largest retailer platforms

  • Large online marketplaces may contain a mix of highly reputable and lower-quality sellers, making it difficult for consumers to evaluate supplement quality

  • Both high-quality and low-quality supplements are present. Consumers don't know which one to choose.

  • Inaccurate labeling is common.

  • People are easily carried away by tags like Best seller and Amazon's choice.

  • Supplements are stored in warehouses that cannot regulate the amount of heat and light exposure.

  • Supplements are stored in warehouses for longer periods. As a result, ingredients become ineffective and degrade over time.Improper storage conditions such as excessive heat, humidity, or prolonged warehouse storage may affect supplement potency.

Case study: What happens when customers have no idea about the supplement, but they choose it online?

FDA warning case study infographic about Umary and Amazy supplements containing hidden drugs and serious health risks

On the FDA website, we found a report that highlights important perspectives on label transparency.

Case:  Presence of drug ingredients in “Natural” Pain Relief Supplements.

In 2024, the U.S. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public warning against purchasing or consuming Umary and Amazy products. They were marketed as dietary supplements for pain relief.

In lab tests, it was revealed that these products have pharmaceutical ingredients, specifically diclofenac and omeprazole. If any consumer chooses a supplement, then product labels are expected to maintain strict transparency principles, and they should disclose ingredient name and the right dosage.

In this case, it is clear that there is a gap in reality between what the customer sees and what is actually present in the supplement. This supplement was natural and safe according to the consumer but it had undisclosed drug ingredients. These factors increase the risk of the consumer.

What Nutriessential wants to tell its consumers

There are brands that follow scientific principles and are manufactured in GMP-certified facilities. Such supplement brands are reputable and they maintain transparency in ingredient labeling. Always follow what your healthcare provider says. There are supplement brands that are trusted by healthcare professionals.

What actually happened?

Umary and Amazy products were promoted to relieve pain and other conditions. They were easily available online at major retailer stores like Amazon.

Consumers perceived these products as natural alternatives,lower-risk solutions, and safer substitutes to prescription pain medications.FDA received an increase in adverse event reports with usage of these supplements like gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and serious skin reactions.

FDA laboratory testing found ingredients like diclofenac and omeprazole in these supplements and it was not listed on the product label. Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular and gastrointestinal complications. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat gastric (stomach) acid-related disorders. It is associated withserious skin reactions, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and headache, stomach ulcers and stomach cancer, and it can also interact with other medications.

Safe practices to buy supplements online

Before ordering supplements online, make sure your checklist has all the required checks:

  • Consult an expert first. They will help you choose the right supplement for you. They have experience with GMP-certified brands and they know which brand is right for you.

  • Always read the product label. Check the ingredient name and dosage. Look for seals like GMP certified, NSF certified, organic, allergen-free, third party tested, etc.

  • Nutriesential represents brands that use third-party testing. This ensures quality and label transparency.

  • Buy from online retailers like Nutriessential who ship orders directly from the manufacturer. This is called dropshipping. We chose this model because we believe that product storage and handling is directly proportional to its effectiveness and the manufacturer knows how to store a supplement properly.

  • Choose quality over convenience.

Cautions for consumers:

  • Online retailer platforms are flooded with natural supplements. They have misleading wellness language, exaggerated efficacy claims and pseudo-medical positioning without evidence. Beware of such brands. Choose supplements your healthcare provider recommends.

  • Look for websites that offer services of expert consultations. You can go to the practitioner page of the website and read about experts and their experience. You can book the consultation and buy the supplements recommended by them.

  • Consumers should value ingredient traceability, third-party testing, clinical validation, and manufacturing transparency. At Nutriessential, we represent such brands only.

  • This is a social media era where people blindly follow influencers. It is very easy for them to make miracle claims, do symptom-cure positioning and support fear-based marketing. But we tell our consumers to avoid these.

  • Trust recommendations and the opinion of healthcare providers only. Avoid opinions of social media influencers.
