Super Lipoic Acid provides antioxidant support for the maintenance of good health and reduces the symptoms of neuropathy in Type II diabetes. Lipoic Acid, also known as alpha-lipoic acid or thioctic acid, is a dietary antioxidant found naturally in plant and animal foods. Although it can be synthesized in the liver and tissues, the most powerful benefits are seen when it is taken at supplemental doses. ALA and its reduced form dihydrolipoic acid (DHPA) act as antioxidants through several mechanisms: they quench reactive oxygen species (ROS); regenerate vitamin C, vitamin E and the primary cellular antioxidant glutathione; chelate metal ions and repair oxidized proteins. Because ALA is both water- and fat-soluble and able to cross the blood-brain-barrier, it is able to reduce oxidation throughout the body. ALA is also cofactor for energy-producing metabolic reactions. Free radicals and ROS are products of the environmental oxygen essential to human life. Oxidative damage to DNA by ROS can lead to potential membrane dysfunction, protein modification, enzyme inactivation or DNA strand breaks and modifications. Oxidative modifications to LDL cholesterol can also be implicated in the development of atherosclerotic plaques. ALA has been shown to scavenge hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorous acid, peroxynitrite and nitric oxide; while DHPA acts on peroxyl and superoxide radicals. The ALA and DHPA redox complex is considered one of the most powerful biological antioxidant systems. Lipoic Acid is guaranteed to contain no eggs, fish, gluten, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soy, sulphites, tree nuts, corn, animal- or dairy by-products. Lipoic Acid does not contain genetically-modified ingredients, is not tested on animals and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
